Junior Summer Cup Final 2009
This year’s final, for mixed teams of
players born 1993 and younger, was held at Watford Woodside pool on 12th
September. Five teams entered and played each other in league format.
Basildon and Deben (Woodbridge) were first in the water. Basildon quickly built
up a 4 goal lead before Deben opened their account, then scored twice more
before the half-time whistle including a hat-trick from John Vella. With Deben
unable to add to their score Basildon finished comfortable 9-1 winners. Ipswich
then took on Watford B and scored 3 quick goals, holding onto their lead though
a goalless second half to take the win over Watford’s up and coming players.
Tournament favourites Watford A lined up against Deben and steady scoring saw
the home team build an 11-0 lead including 3 from Ben Kohler. Laura White pulled
one back for Deben in the last minute, much to the delight of the team and
spectators.
Basildon eased past Watford B to win 6-1 with William Norris scoring the junior
side’s first goal of the tournament. Watford A then took on Ipswich and scored 4
before Ipswich retaliated with a fine goal just before half-time. But that was
to be their only score - Watford piled on the pressure and finished 13-1 victors
with a hat-trick from Jared Baker and half a dozen goals from his team mates.
Deben beat Watford B 1-0 in a low scoring but thoroughly entertaining game as
the younger players in both teams showed their potential. This was followed by a
tense match between Basildon and Ipswich. Both sides defended skilfully and
neither could gain the upper hand. With a minute to go the score stood at 2-2,
then Ali Clements found the net to give Ipswich a slender lead. The game reached
its climax as Basildon mounted a fierce assault but somehow Ipswich clung on
till the final whistle to take the points.
By contrast the next game was an easy victory for Watford A against their own
Bteam. A whitewash looked likely until Jason Robertson scored Watford B’s only
goal with just one second left on the clock to end the match 11-1. Suffolk
rivals Ipswich and Deben then took to the water in an exciting contest of attack
and counter-attackthat ended 4-2 to the more experienced side.
The final game of the evening had the spectators on the edge of their seats. All
the medals were up for grabs as Watford A and Basildon lined up. But the home
side were too strong for the Essex visitors and Watford ended the first half 4-0
ahead. Vella scored twice for Basildon in the second period, but further goals
from Matt Eggleton and Kohler saw Watford through as Cup winners without
dropping a point. Last year’s winners Basildon had to settle for the bronze
medals while Ipswich collected silver.
The Cup and medals were presented by Sheila Mackenzie (in her debut appearance
as ASA East Region President) and Derek Milton (Hertfordshire ASA President) who
congratulated all the players on a thrilling tournament.
