So Counties 2017 is now over, but what a finish to the championships for our young swimmers.
Kicking off the weekend with the 400 freestyle and individual events, we had 28 Watford swimmers tackling these longer races on Saturday. The girls started the racing well with 6 PBs between them and Erin O’Meara bringing home a silver medal, as well as claiming a regional qualifying time. In the boys 400 IM, we saw another 6 PBs with Lewis Shayler, Alex Williams and Devesh Kapoor claiming medals (gold, silver and bronze respectively), with those three along with Ketan Rach qualifying for regionals.

Saturday afternoon saw the reverse of these two races, with the boys taking on the 400 freestyle and the girls tackling the 400 IM. The boys performed brilliantly, grabbing 7 PBs between them, and Ben Green and Enzo Lim bringing in the medals (silver and bronze). Ben, Enzo and Devesh also secured regional qualifying times. The girls secured a further 6 PBs between them, with Erin and Sophie Burns claiming gold and bronze medals and regional qualifying times too.
Sunday morning was an even tougher morning, with the longest distance events, the 800m for the girls and the 1500m for the boys. 9 of our girls tackled their event, with 5 of them securing big PBs in the process and Erin bagging a bronze medal in her age group, along with another regional qualifying time. Our 4 boys in the 1500m swam some brilliant races, with all of them bagging medals in the process (Devesh– gold, Alex W – silver, Dan Ord and Ethan Sutton – bronze).
Sunday afternoon was the finale of the championships, the relays. Watford were fielding teams in every single event and between them we had some brilliant swims to finish off a month of fast racing. Our 12-13 year old girls (Harriet Clements, Lydia Zanetti, Maggie Fleet, Gemma Nottage) secured well-deserved silver medals in the medley relay, with the girls also claiming gold in the freestyle relay later on. Our 14-15 year old girls (Fiona Holmes, Erin, Ellie Williams, Alex Lawman) were also in top form, claiming gold in their medley relay, and also secured bronze in the freestyle relay with Francesca Peccei stepping in to replace Ellie. Our senior girls (Sophie, Emily Sellen, Ceri Heard, Leanne Carey) secured a fantastic bronze in their medley relay, with Abi Green stepping in to replace Emily to help the team to a silver medal in the freestyle.
The boys were equally as successful, with the 12-13 year old boys teams securing both gold and bronze medals in the medley relays – the A team of Ketan, Ben, Alex W and Enzo claiming gold, and the B team of Arvin Rodriguez, Charlie Taverner, Dan and Alex Olayomi claiming the bronze. In the freestyle relay, the A team of Ketan, Arvin, Enzo and Ben also secured a fantastic gold medal, in a race they led from start to finish. Our 14-15 year old boys missed out on the medals in both the medley and freestyle events, but still swam amazingly, as did our senior boys team in both their events.
Overall, a fantastic championships for our swimmers, with over 270 PBs, more than 70 medals and over 50 regional qualifying times. All their training over the first few months of the season has clearly been paying off. Well done to all!
