Bath time over

It was a fitting grand finale for Watford Water Polo Club to reclaim the Herts League KO Cup with their last match at Watford Central Baths.
The side defeated 2006 Herts League Champions Bedford 11-6 in the final last Wednesday, before the building is demolished as part of a new £20m redevelopment in Bushey.
Watford were always in control and even though they had a two-goal advantage due to the competition’s handicap rules were still never behind.  A strong performance from five-goal Ciaran Walsh was one of the stand out features of this match.
But near the end it turned into the Paul Skerm show.  With three quick, unanswered goals Skerm and Watford put the game beyond their rivals, before Walsh closed the curtain on the club’s time at Central Baths with his fifth goal.

Watford SC wins Knockout
6th December 2006
Watford Central Pool

The last competitive game of water polo to be played at the Watford Central Baths, before its enforced closure, was the final of the Hertfordshire & District Handicap Knockout Competition on 6 December 2006.  Watford SC’s water polo team ran out worthy winners, defeating Bedford WPC (winners of the 2006 League competition) by a score of 14‑7, including the handicap goals.
Under the competition’s handicap rules Watford started with an advantage of three goals to one and were always in control.  The first quarter began with Watford storming into a two-goal lead after only two minutes play thanks to a brace of goals from Ciaran Walsh.  When Watford gained a man-up advantage, Lee Bell calmly placed a five metre shot into the top corner of the net to extend the lead to 3-0.  Bedford hit back moments later but with the quarter coming to a close a smart back shot from Richard Hime restored Watford’s lead at 4‑1.
The second quarter began when Watford forced another man-up situation.  However, on this occasion they were unable to extend their lead, but minutes later further pressure on the Bedford goal paid off when Paul Skerm scored his first of the evening from close range for his side to lead 5-1.  Bedford then found some form and hit back with two quick goals from their captain, Matt Oughton, and Justine Irvine - the 2006 Hertfordshire League’s leading goal scorer.  Once again with the quarter coming to a close Watford’s Walsh scored to complete his hat-trick and extend his team’s lead to 6-3.
The third quarter opened with Watford extending their lead still further thanks to another goal from Walsh (7-3).  Bedford then had a number of opportunities to close the gap but a missed penalty from Irvine and a close range effort superbly saved by the Watford goalkeeper, Steve Chambers, kept Bedford at bay.  With only 20 seconds of the quarter remaining, a shot from Bedford’s Russell Hargreaves moved the score on to 7-4.
The final period opened with Bedford looking to close the gap and, with only 47 seconds remaining on the clock, Bedford’s Oughton found a way through the Watford defence for a 7-5 score line.  However, at this point the game turned into the Paul Skerm show and with three quick unanswered goals Skerm and Watford took the game and the ‘Gus Goater Cup’ back from their League rivals.  Bedford then hit back to momentarily halt the slide but as the game came to a close another goal from Watford’s Walsh, his fifth of the night, made the final score 11-6 to Watford.

Final score 5 - 3

Watford water Polo Club secured the winter league Division two title on Wednesday night with a hard fought victory at home to Bexley.
In a game that had few chances and with both goalkeepers performing well it was Watford that gain the upperhand in the opening quarter to lead by two clear goals, Watford held on to this advantage for the remainder of the game to secure the victory they so badly needed.
Watford opened the scoring after only a minute’s play, Richard Hime was left on his own following a Bexley major foul and his shot on goal went in under the keeper’s arms to register the first goal of the night. Bexley then carved out a couple of good chances but both the Watford defence and keeper Steve Chambers kept them at bay. Watford extended their lead when Paul Skerm received the ball in front of goal and turning his man his powerful shot found the top corner
for a 2-0 lead.
Bexley hit back shortly after but with only 50 seconds of the quarter remaining another Skerm goal gave his side a two goal advantage at 3-1.
The second quarter didn’t produce a single goal as some fine saves from both keepers and some woefully shooting from the Watford attack kept the score at 3-1.
The third was a very even affair with a goal apiece from each side, Watford’s came via Skerm for his hat-trick on the night after a minutes play, further chances when begging for both sides until 30 seconds from the end of the quarter an excellent shot from Bexley’s Dave Watson found the top corner of the Watford net for a 4-2 scoreline.
The final period saw Bexley going for victory but again some fine saves from Chambers in the Watford goal and some desperate defending from the Watford defence kept the visitors at bay until with only with only a minutes play remaining and victory in sight a half chance from Bexley looped over the advancing Watford keeper to find the net for a 4-3 scoreline. Watford hit straight back and within 15 seconds Roy Coulson found space on the wing and receiving the ball from Richard Hime his powerful shot found the net for a 5-3 victory and with it the Division two title.
