With the last game of Water Polo played at Central pool before the enforced closure Watford Water Polo Club reclaimed the Herts League KO Cup by defeating the 2006 Herts League Champions Bedford.
Watford were always in control and even though they had a two goal advantage due to the competitions handicap rules, Watford were never behind.
The first quarter began with Watford storming into a two goal lead after only 2 minutes play thanks to a brace from Ciaran Walsh & then when Watford gained a man advantage Lee Bell calmly placed a five metre shot into the top corner of the net to extend the lead to 3-0. Bedford hit back moments later but with the quarter coming to a close a smart back shot from Richard Hime restored Watford’s lead at 4-1.
The 2nd quarter began when Watford forced another man-up situation however on this occasion they were unable to extend their lead but minutes later further pressure on the Bedford goal paid off when Paul Skerm scored his first of the evening from close range for his side to lead 5-1.
Bedford then found some form and hit back with two quick goals from their Captain Matt Oughton & the 2006 Herts League leading goal scorer Justine Irvine. But once again with the quarter coming to a close Watford’s Walsh scored to complete his hat-trick & extend his team’s lead to 6-3.
The 3rd Quarter opened with Watford extending their lead thanks to another goal from Walsh (7-3). Bedford then had a number of opportunities to close the gap but a missed penalty from Irvine and a close range effort superbly saved by Watford keeper Steve Chambers kept Bedford at bay but with only 20 seconds of the quarter remaining a shot from Bedford’s Russell Hargreaves moved the score on to 7-4.
The final period opened with Bedford looking to close the gap & with only 47 seconds on the clock Bedford’s Oughton found a way through the Watford defence for a 7-5 scoreline. However at this point the game turned into the Paul Skerm show and with three quick unanswered goals Skerm & Watford took the game & the Cup back from their league revivals. Bedford then hit back to momentarily halt the slide but as the game came to a close another goal from Watford’s Walsh for his fifth of the nigh made the final score 11-6 to Watford.

Watford water Polo Club secured the winter league Division two title on Wednesday night with a hard fought victory at home to Bexley.
In a game that had few chances and with both goalkeepers performing well it was Watford that gain the upperhand in the opening quarter to lead by two clear goals, Watford held on to this advantage for the remainder of the game to secure the victory they so badly needed.
Watford opened the scoring after only a minute’s play, Richard Hime was left on his own following a Bexley major foul and his shot on goal went in under the keeper’s arms to register the first goal of the night. Bexley then carved out a couple of good chances but both the Watford defence and keeper Steve Chambers kept them at bay. Watford extended their lead when Paul Skerm received the ball in front of goal and turning his man his powerful shot found the top corner for a 2-0 lead.
Bexley hit back shortly after but with only 50 seconds of the quarter remaining another Skerm goal gave his side a two goal advantage at 3-1.
The second quarter didn’t produce a single goal as some fine saves from both keepers and some woefully shooting from the Watford attack kept the score at 3-1.
The third was a very even affair with a goal apiece from each side, Watford’s came via Skerm for his hat-trick on the night after a minutes play, further chances when begging for both sides until 30 seconds from the end of the quarter an excellent shot from Bexley’s Dave Watson found the top corner of the Watford net for a 4-2 scoreline.
The final period saw Bexley going for victory but again some fine saves from Chambers in the Watford goal and some desperate defending from the Watford defence kept the visitors at bay until with only with only a minutes play remaining and victory in sight a half chance from Bexley looped over the advancing Watford keeper to find the net for a 4-3 scoreline. Watford hit straight back and within 15 seconds Roy Coulson found space on the wing and receiving the ball from Richard Hime his powerful shot found the net for a 5-3 victory and with it the Division two title.
Well done to the Herts Polo Team at the U16 2001 Southern Counties Water Polo at Eaton College, Windsor on Sunday 18th November.
